Now That's What I Call Music! 53

If you're going to buy a sturdy compilation of hits from the pop charts, Now That's What I Call Music 53 is the one to get. Weathering the storm for many years, the brand has survived thanks to its blend of pop, rock, soul and dance. This instalment includes a good selection of number ones from DJ Sammy ("Heaven") and the Sugababes ("Round Round"), to name but two. Other pop favourites include Blue ("One Love"), Las Ketchup ("Ketchup Song") and Darius with his number one "Colourblind". On an indie guitar note, there's the giant "In My Place" by Coldplay and "Check the Meaning" by ex-Verve Richard Ashcroft. From the heavy rock camp there's Puddle of Mudd ("She Hates Me") and Bowling for Soup ("Girl All the Bad Guys Want") and in the urban corner there's Eminem's "Without Me" and "Ms Dynamite's "Dy-Na-My-Tee". As ever there are bizarre inclusions: it's hard to imagine anyone listening to the likes of Liberty X or Britney Spears then getting deep down and dirty with Status Quo or Eva Cassidy but at the end of the day, diversity is the nature of this beast. --Georgina Collins

Tuesday Night Music Club

Sheryl Crow's proper debut--an earlier, slicker record was scrapped in favour of Tuesday Night--occasionally reaches too far in attempting significance, as when the album opens by name-checking Aldous Huxley. Usually, though, Crow and her band of LA session and singer/songwriter collaborators strike just the right tone. The "Stuck in the Middle with You" homage of "All I Wanna Do", the clanking guitar riff of "Can't Cry Anymore" and the funky threat of "What I Can Do for You" meld perfectly with the lyrics, resulting in a peak of mainstream pop-rock. --Rickey Wright

An Equal Music / Verwandte Stimmen - Music From the Novel

Vikram Seth's novel An Equal Music is as evocative a portrait of the world of chamber music as you could wish for, but Seth is the first to say that words "can only attempt to describe what cannot truly be described". This two-CD set adds the inevitably missing dimension to a great book, with performances of works which feature in the story. They include the world-premiere recording of Beethoven's String Quintet in C minor, an obscure work which is central to the plot. This, like the rest of the selection, is beautifully played and recorded, for this is not a collection of second-rate recordings cobbled together to suit the theme. Vikram Seth himself has chosen the performances and, with performers of the stature of Iona Brown and Andras Schiff, the playing is as good as it gets. Included in the selection is Schubert's celebrated "Trout" Quintet. If the book gives a taste for the music and vice versa, these CDs will also get us delving further into this delightful and infectious repertoire. --Keith Clarke
