Debussy / Franck: Music for Cello and Piano

Once in a while--and it can be a long while--an ostensibly run-of-the-mill CD turns up that takes you wholly and a touch shamefacedly by surprise. And here’s a prime example: mainstream, much-recorded repertory (Debussy, Poulenc, Franck, Ravel) for cello and piano, issued as part of EMI’s ongoing Debut series to showcase a young German cellist whose name has just begun to feature on the Wigmore chamber circuit. At face value it’s a worthy venture--it's so important to support young artists. Then you play it and discover it’s far more than worthy. It’s completely captivating and can stand comparison with almost any version of this music currently on disc. At 26, Daniel Müller-Schott, has a distinctive personality inclined to pure, unblemished lyricism. He plays with no hint of rasp. His immaculately musical phrasing is long and sustained. And although you might prefer a stronger attack, especially at the slow, expansive speeds he chooses in the Franck Sonata, the result is fabulously beautiful: slightly reserved, but to the letter of a piece of advice by Piatigorsky that Müller-Schott cites in a liner note. "French music", Piatigorsky says, "must be played as though in a state of intoxication, but each and every note must be in its proper place." A telling comment and exactly as you find here. Highly recommended, even though the pianist has been heavily recorded.--Michael White
